On Tuesday, April 22, 2025, the Marin County Flood Control District Board of Supervisors approved the Plans and Specifications for the Lower College of Marin Restoration Project, as the second component of the overall Corte Madera Creek Flood Risk Management project to be constructed.
This upcoming construction component will restore 575 linear feet of Corte Madera Creek’s existing concrete channel from just downstream of the Stadium Way pedestrian bridge to the existing wider natural channel by removing the vertical concrete channel walls, and grading the earthen material behind the vertical walls to create more natural tidal wetland embankments with native vegetation. This work will support improved ecological functions and provide more adaptable conditions for future sea level rise. The project improvements have been designed to accommodate stormwater flood flows associated with a 25-year storm event.
Weather permitting, work within the creek will be limited to the window of September 1 to mid-October. Project improvements like fencing and retaining walls out of the creek channel may continue into November as necessary.
Grant Funding for this phase of construction has been generously provided by California Coastal Conservancy, US Fish and Wildlife National Coastal Wetlands Conservation Grant Program, CA Rescue Act Funding, and CA Department of Water Resources.
Support from our project partners at Friends of Corte Madera Creek and The College of Marin has driven this from just a concept to tangible improvements that are of significant benefit.
